Empezó a jugar en el club de su ciudad, Camas, antes de pasar a las categorías inferiores del Sevilla FC. Sergio Ramos es otro producto más de la excelente cantera del Sevilla. El de Camas se convirtió así en un importante pilar en el que se apoyaba el Sevilla Atlético. En la temporada 2003/04, Sergio Ramos que ya apuntaba muy buenas maneras en las secciones inferiores del equipo hispalense, alternó el Sevilla Atlético con el primer equipo. Una vez más Joaquín Caparrós fue el encargado de hacer debutar a un canterano, en éste caso era Ramos, el día 1 de Febrero 2004, en un partido que enfrentó al Sevilla FC contra el Deportivo de la Coruña. Durante su estancia en el Sevilla FC, compartió vestuario con Jesús Navas y con el fallecido Antonio Puerta. Habiendo jugado tan sólo tres temporadas en el primer equipo del Sevilla, fue transferido al Real Madrid en el verano de 2005 por 27 millones de Euros, convirtiéndose así en el traspaso más caro de la historia por un jugador de su edad. Fue el único jugador español incorporado al club durante la primera presidencia de Florentino Pérez.
